Gladys Vreeland Niper
Died: Mar 31, 2017

Gladys Vreeland Niper, 87, of Beloit, WI, died March 31, 2017 after a long illness.  Born May 28, 1929, in Hackettstown, she was a daughter of the late George and Lulu Vreeland. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Howard, her daughter Lani Niper Justus, and her sister, Jay Vreeland.

A graduate of Hackettstown High School, Gladys married Howard Niper and owned and operated Niper Studio for over 30 years. During those years she was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, and Soroptomist International. The Nipers were involved in many aspects of Hackettstown life including Memorial Day parades and promoting and improving small businesses.

In the mid 90's Gladys and Howard moved to Beloit, WI, to be closer to their daughter Lani and their grandson Jesse. Gladys was a creative and accomplished oil painter and china painter. She was generous with her art as many friends enjoyed receiving samples of her work, often personalized, which will help keep her memory alive. She attended the First Congregational Church of Beloit, volunteered at a local thrift shop, and was active with the Marine Corps League.

She is survived by her grandson, Jesse Justus, his wife Katie, and their infant son Jonah of Sheboygan, WI.  She also leaves behind a niece, Judy Niper Van Noy of Titusville, NJ, and several great-nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at noon on Wednesday, April 5, at Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows.  All services are under the direction of the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:  Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL         60601

Condolences:

The Howard Niper family is now complete in heaven with Gladys passing. I never saw Gladys without a smile on her face and a sincere welcome in her voice. Arlene B is correct, the family was Hackettstown history and family to all. So sorry, Jesse. They were good people.

Jesse and family: Gladys, to this day, appears in a photo displayed in my living room. It was taken in October of 1944, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown, when my mother, Arlene Elizabeth Tynan, married my father, Herbert William Saunders. She was still Gladys Vreeland and served as the Maid of Honor. My Mom and your grandmother were two beautiful young ladies. Also, I still have the Christmas postcard greetings Gladys sent out when Lani was a charming little girl with platinum blonde hair and photographed so nicely. My mother saved them and I kept them . . . oh, for sentimental reasons. If you'd like copies of these photos, let me know. The Nipers were very special people and I'll always remember them. Peace be with you.

My condolences to the family. For many years when I walked to school, I would stop at the Niper house to pick up Lani along the way. I would be greeted by both Mr and Mrs Niper, and would sit while waiting for Lani to finish her breakfast. I am sorry I cannot make it to the Memorial Service.

With heartfelt sympathy to all those who loved Aunt Gladys as I have. My thoughts and prayers to Jesse, Judy, and other family and friends. I regret N.C. is so far away that I am unable to attend the service and bring my Mom as well. May God Bless Aunt Gladys and her survivors.

Robin & I are saddened to read Mrs. Niper's Passing. Mr. Howard, Mrs. Gladys and I would meet once or twice a week at their Studio Home on Moore Street and Talk Town History and Politics. They were my biggest supporters during my first Council term, and we would talk for hours. I just loved the Niper's and though Mrs. Niper has been away from Town for a long period, it still has lost another Treasure! Jesse and Family, may the LORD comfort you and Bless you all during this period of Mourning. All of our love Paul & Robin Wallace
