Warren "Toby"  Rowland

Warren C. (Toby) Rowland, 94, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2015, at home after a short illness. A resident of Hackettstown, N.J. , he was born in Porter Corners, N.Y., on January 20, 1921. There, Toby farmed, owned and operated a sawmill business and worked for the Saratoga County Highway Department. He relocated to Hackettstown in 1950 and was employed by the former Triumph Machinery Corp. and American Can Company until his retirement. The son of Joseph and Florence (Hodges) Rowland, Toby was a “jack of all trades.” There was nothing he couldn’t fix and nothing he couldn’t build, including the house he lived in for the past 65 years. In 1947, he married the former Margaret (Peggy) M. McGowan of New York City. Together they raised five children, three sons and two daughters. They celebrated 59 years of marriage until Peggy’s death in 2006. Toby spent his retirement years enjoying his family (including his 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren), fixing things, gardening, helping his children, friends and neighbors, and accomplishing many other projects. There was no one he wouldn’t help. He is survived by his five children: Peter (Diane) and Therese Tomlinson of Hackettstown, Anne Clymer (Randy) of Lemont, Pa., John (Margaret) of Bethlehem Twp., Pa. and Joseph (Patricia) of Emmaus, Pa., 13 grandchildren, Bill and Melissa Tomlinson, Megan and Brian Rogers, Michael Rowland, Bridget Tomlinson, Andrew and Lauren Rowland, PJ and Elizabeth Rowland, Tim and Molly Clymer, Katie Rowland, Annie Rowland, Liz Rowland, Shannon and Chris Barrett, Matt Clymer, and Amy Rowland. six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Holden, Addison, Emma, Amelia, Freddy, and his devoted caregiver Tamara Nukradze. He also leaves behind two brothers, Jarvis Sr. of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Henry of Greenfield Center, N.Y., a sister, Ruth Hayes of Schuylerville, N.Y. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife,Peggy, parents, brothers Winfield, Ralph, and Myron, sister Gertrude, son-in-law Scott Tomlinson and grandson Sean Clymer. Toby was a faithful parishioner of the Church of the Assumption in Hackettstown where he served as an usher for many years. A viewing will be held at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street in Hackettstown on Monday, July 20, 2015 from 4-7 p.m. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Church of the Assumption, 302 High Street, also in Hackettstown. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Mountain Cemetery, Route 24, Long Valley, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in Toby’s memory to Glenmary Home Missioners, P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, OH 45246-5618.

Toby was a long time customer in my barber shop.He was a great man enjoyed him with our talks.He could do anything he put his mind to.I will miss him .
