Charles "Wally" T. Richards

Charles "Wally" T. Richards, age 88, of Portland, PA., previously from Hackettstown, NJ where he lived for 48 years, died Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at home. Charles was born January 27, 1925 in Dover, NJ. He is the son of the late Russell and Mary (O'Melia) Richards. He was predeceased by his wife, Constance (Caouette) Richards in 1997.   

He was employed by Westinghouse, Succasunna, NJ in the shipping department as a warehouseman.
Charles proudly served in the United States Marine Corps (1942-1946) in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during WW II. He participated in active operations against the enemy at Leyte, Philippine Islands, Tutuila, American Samoa; Kauai, Hilo; Pearl Harbor and Funafuti, Nanumea, Ellice Is. (where he was under enemy attack). After his discharge he returned home to his family and then reinlisted (1948-1951) during the Korean War. He participated in the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin campaign, Northern Korea; against enemy forces in South and Central Korea. Charles then returned home where he enjoyed hunting, liked to do gardening, watching football and was a member of the Senior Citizens of Hackettstown, NJ.   

He is survived by a son Wayne and his wife Mary Richards, Hackettstown, NJ; three daughters Carol Garity, East Bangor, PA.; Linda and her husband Hubert McHugh, Portland, PA., Diana Banashefski, Stroudsburg, PA.; daughter in law, Clara Richards, Blairstown, NJ;12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; predeceased by a son, Ronald Richards.

Calling hours will be Friday, February 15, 2013, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown, NJ 07840 

The funeral will be held 11:30 AM on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. Burial will be in Hackettstown Union Cemetery, Hackettstown, NJ

Unfortunately, we did not see this posting until today, 2/16, and were unable to express our condolences in person. As a former neighbor to "Wally" on Mitchell Road, we have some wonderful memories of his kindness and his great storytelling. He was a great man! Your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Richards Family, I am so sorry to hear of Wally's passing. He was a kind and sweet man and I have great memories of him while I was growing up. I remember him sitting in his chair outside in the summers and always talking to me. My prayers and good thoughts are with you all at this time. Trish Fagan
