Flora Metz
Died: Aug 8, 2014
Flora's compassionate and loving heart meant that she always gave the biggest hugs and the most heartfelt advice to those who needed a friend.
She was an accomplished artist with pictures displayed at the Rockport Artist Society and the mayor's office. Flora always saw tremendous beauty in her surroundings. She longed to paint just one more painting and to capture one more puffy cloud.
Flora used to say that most people don't see the beauty that surrounds them, so she taught us how to see through her eyes; a world with amazing perception, depth, and understanding...an artist's world. A canvas created by God and filled with glorious color.
Her love of color partnered easily with her love of quilting and she developed a lifetime of friendship with a special group of ladies in her quilting guild. Hours were spent creating perfect points for quilts to be given to babies and soldiers in order to bring a bit of joy.
Flora cared deeply for those around her and had a magic cupboard that seemed to carry an endless supply of everyone's favorite food. The family will attest that she made the best pies east of the Mississippi and everything that she cooked just tasted better.
During her lifetime she lived through major changes in technology. She used to talk about horse-drawn fire wagons, ice blocks for refrigeration, crystal radios, the first TVs, and the magic box that we call the ipad. She drove across the U.S. and visited our national parks on the country's first interstates. She outlived Roosevelt, Hoover, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan, and Ford. All this change could have easily overwhelmed her but didn't. She never forgot her roots and that was her strength. In her last year of life, she was speaking French to all who knew her native tongue and teaching French to others who didn't.
She loved her husband Andy with all of her heart. Her happiest memory was waltzing at the Spanish Gable with him. She was wearing a pink gown that floated and everyone stopped to watch them dance by. Her family was her treasure and she had special bonds with each of us, especially with her daughter Rose. "You are more beautiful than I could have ever imagined and dearer to my heart then you will ever know" is how she described her great grandchildren. They made her eyes sparkle.
These are just some of the gifts she gave to us, memories of her, her legacy, and her lifetime of love. Thank you God for our great gift....
Condolences:
