Edward R. Shanahan, Jr. 68, of Mt. Bethel, Pa. died on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Heath Village, Hackettstown, N.J. surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 18, 1945 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Ed was the son of the late Edward R. & Lillian Steffans Shanahan, Sr.. He has lived in Mt. Bethel, Pa. for the past 12 yrs. coming from Long Valley, N.J. where he and his family resided for 25yrs.
Ed was a 1964 graduate of Chatham High School and continued his education at Christian Brother's College, Memphis, Tenn. from which he graduated in 1968.
Mr. Shanahan and his former business partner, the late Andrew Tufts co-owned and operated Oliver's Restaurant of Chester, N.J. for 25 years and retired from the restauraunt in 1996. Most recently, Ed worked as a real estate agent for the former Stan Udell Real Estate agency and lastly for Fiedler Real Estate Agency of Hackettstown from which he retired. Prior to owning Oliver's, Ed had been employed by the Mepco Co. of Morristown, N.J. and the Black Bull Restaraunt, Mtn Lakes, N.J.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 yrs., Margaret "Peggy" Hurley Shanahan. One son, Edward R. Shanahan, III of Mt. Bethel, Pa.. One daughter, Colleen Shanahan Jones and her husband Dave of Independence Twp., N.J.. One sister, Arlene FitzPatrick of Fairfax, Va. and nephews Sean and Thomas. Three loving Grandchildren, Reese, Dean and Lena Jones. He will be dearly missed by Peggy's extended family, the Hurley Clan!
Viewing hours will be on Tuesday, 5-27, 2014 from 4 to 8pm at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown, N.J., 07840. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, 5-28-14, 11am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows, N.J.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at St. Jude Childrens Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program,, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Ten., 38105-1942 or Joan Knechel Cancer Center, c/o HRMC, 651 Willow Grove Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.
