Frederick F. Hand, Jr.
Died: May 31, 2017
Hand, Jr.

Frederick F Hand, Jr, age 61, a longtime resident of New Jersey, died Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ.  Fred was born November 8, 1955 in Langdale, AL. He is the son of Frederick Foy and Nancy Elizabeth (Aikens) Hand, Sr., who are currently living in Sandy Springs, GA.

He served for 20 years as a civilian engineer with the US Army Corp of Engineers, New York District. He was especially proud of the support he gave to NY City in safe guarding the bridges, removing the water from the subways after hurricane Sandy and many projects at West Point.

Fred’s passion was fishing. His love of the local fishing spots was the reason he chose to live in the Hackettstown area, despite the long commute into Manhattan.

He is survived by his devoted parents; Frederick Foy and Nancy Elizabeth (Aikens) Hand, Sr., a brother, Allen Hand and wife Renae, 2 sisters, Sherri Kent and Linda Martin and her husband James.  Fred is also survived by Abby Martin and David Hand, his beloved niece and nephew.

A memorial service will be held in Atlanta, GA.

Condolences:

One of the last projects Fred worked on was the new Waste Water Treatment Plant at West Point and every time it gets mentioned I think of Fred. I'm still missing him. He was such a down to earth guy. He liked chocolate, who would have guessed because he was so skinny. I knew him since the 90's. He left the Corps once before and then he came back to us. I saw the memorial video and I want to thank you for sharing those moments with me/us. Personally, I felt so much better knowing Fred had such good times and good family. He was a single guy and I felt sad for him and then I saw the video and it made me feel better. My condolences to the family and I'll keep him in my prayers, especially when I go fishing. Now he's watching over us.

My condolences and sympathies on Fred's passing. Fred was a friendly, personable colleague who was dedicated to the cause, and besides bringing his great enthusiasm and professional skills to the task, often brought much needed comic relief just at the right times! I will miss you my friend!

I worked with Fred on one project at the Corps that has been going on for many years and we were always guaranteed an interesting, usually insightful and well-grounded, sometimes irreverent and often funny comment or observation from Fred. He was truly an interesting character and will be missed. My sympathy to his loved ones for their loss.

Helen and I were so very sad to hear the news about my cousin Fred. We are in Australia taking care of Helen's 97 year old mother so it takes a little while for news to reach us. There was always 12 years age difference and geographical distance between Fred and me so we were never really close. I do remember when he was born and knew him as a small child. It seems that God often takes the best people early and judging by the comments made by those who knew Fred he was a very special person. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Nancy and Uncle Foy, Sherri, Allen, and Linda and their families, and all those friends who were a part of Fred's life. I know that you will miss him dearly.

Fred was my brother. I will always miss him. I will remember his conversations, laughter, kindness, chocolate addiction and farts. As many of you know, Fred loved to fish but did you know he would NEVER eat fish (EVER!).

Fred and I go back to 2002, when I first met him to collaborate on a project that DOT has with Army Corps of Engineers. Fred has been the backbone on the project since then providing valuable support that the project needed. Over the past years I have come to know the real Fred - kind, sensitive, caring, and as the one who made decisions on the go. My wish was for him to be there to finish the project together. However it was not meant to be. But there is no forgetting Fred. I will definitely miss him. Goodbye my friend.

To Fred's family, he was one of the most dedicated people that I have ever worked with, but more importantly, he always had time to make everyone laugh.

We were fortunate to work with Fred on the NYC bridges. He was a patriot, an understanding client, and could always be counted on to crack a good joke when needed. We will miss him.

I loved Fred with all my heart and being. He was one of the best sons anyone could have. We lived far apart but stayed very close by talking to each other every week and sometimes even more. Our family is very close. His brother and his wife and his two sisters flew up to New Jersey to celebrate his 60th birthday with him. As soon as his brother Allen, knew he was sick, he immediately went up and has been with him until he died. His two sisters flew up last week to be with him. We, his parents would have been with him if we were healthy enough. Our hearts were with him. We love you Fred and miss you.

Fred was a great brother-in-law. He loved the mountains, fishing, working for the Corps and making the family laugh by farting during group photos. He loved his work at the Corps so much, we wondered how he would ever bring himself to retire. Now he'll never have to face that. Family gatherings won't be the same without him. He left us too soon, and he will be remembered always with great affection.

It had been many years since I'd seen my dear cousin, Fred. As children we saw one another more frequently. My last visit with him was when the World Trade Center still stood and he hosted my teenage daughter and me on her first visit to New York City. We had brunch at Windows on the World and spent the afternoon sightseeing. My heart is with my aunt,, uncle and cousins. Know that Timm was there to welcome Fred home.

We all remember Fred fondly for those of us who grew up with him, from Eisenhower School through Ramapo Hugh School. I was close friends with his girlfriend at the time Cathy Darby, who was a first love. They were adorable and totally infatuated with each other. Fred remained part of the large group I hung out with, and dated Patty Hall, another close friend of mine, when Cathy moved away after 8th grade. He was funny and adorable and will be missed by all of us from home who knew him.

I never got a chance to say bye to Fred when we last met a few months ago but at least we had a few good laughs. Fred was the best and most dedicated engineer out their. He was also the one of the coolest happy go lucky guy I ever hung out with. Fred and I go back decades and taught me some pretty neat design ideas/techniques from the many projects he worked on. I'll always remember Fred's advice and good times we had. It feels that you're still around but know your fishing or partying in heaven. The next time I get a huge stripe bass, I'll know you helped out.
