John had served 4 years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and took part in the Berlin Airlift. After his discharge, he worked for a time for New Jersey Bell Telephone as a lineman. He later worked for Kearfott in Little Falls, N.J. developing and implementing gyroscopic guidance systems for the Nike missiles used by the Army in the 1960’s. He went on to work for Razdow Laboratories in Newark, N.J. where he developed and implemented solar tracking systems for a large tracking installation in the Canary Islands. After his tenure with Razdow, John spent the bulk of his career at Picatinny Arsenal as a maintenance management specialist for 30 years developing weapons systems used by the U.S. Army.
He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and participated in men’s bible study and other activities and missions at Trinity throughout the years. He is survived by his three sons: John Spier III and wife Mary, Dennis Spier and wife Tracy, Mark Spier and wife Gayle, 1 brother Peter Zaccario and wife Nancy and 4 grandchildren, Michael, Travis, John IV and Courtney Spier. Calling hours will be from 4 – 7pm Thursday, June 5, 2014 and Friday June 6, 2014 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. 07840. Funeral services for John will be at the Cochran Funeral Home on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 11am with Rev. Dr. Frank Fowler officiating. Cremation is private.
