Sylvester "Robert" "Sonny" Clayton Robinson
Died: Jun 21, 2019
Our beloved husband and father, Sylvester Clayton Robinson, was born in Dalton, Missouri on September 19, 1937 to the late Reginald S. Robinson and Levana Robinson. He was the youngest of five children. Silently, he answered God’s call and the doors to heaven opened to receive him on Friday, June 21, 2019.
Sylvester, also known as “Sonny & Robert,” to close family members, was a pleasure to everyone he met. He graduated from Dalton Vocational High School in May 1955. He joined the United States Navy after graduation, attending the US Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois in October 1955.
Sylvester served aboard the USS Coral Seas CV-43 Aircraft Carrier in 1956 and played in a band called “The Cougars”, of which he played Smoker and other local clubs in Norfolk, Virginia, in addition to various USO centers. He later transferred to the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42 Aircraft Carrier. It was during this time that Sylvester and The Cougars were invited to play The Hot Jazz Club in De Cannes in Cannes, France. They played in a town square in Istanbul, and were requested by the King and Queen of Greece to attend and play in their palace gardens during the USS FDR Mediterranean Cruise
Throughout high school and his adult years, Sylvester liked playing basketball, drawing, painting, crafting and the love of music. He played the guitar, piano and liked building computers and watching westerns. Sylvester got his love of music from his father, Reginald, who could play almost any musical instrument except piano, without formal training. That gift was passed to Sylvester who then passed this music ability to his son Daryl, who is a musician and music teacher.
Sylvester met Katherine Combs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Together, they had one son, Daryl Combs Robinson, born December 23, 1970. They were married in Millbourne, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1973.
Sylvester was employed by AT&T as a Building Operations Manager for over 33 before his retirement in 1999. He had previously worked as an installer for Western Electric in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
In health and throughout his illness, Sylvester was a loving, generous, kind-hearted husband, father and friend. Sylvester also enjoyed family reunions, going to the movies with his son Daryl and friends, road trips to visit family, building and fixing things, fishing with his son and buddies from work. Long conversations with his wife Kathy, He collected sports cards and memorabilia. Listening to music and seeing shows. He was featured as a local artist at the Mount Olive Public Library which displayed pieces of his artwork.
Sylvester leaves to rejoice in his memory: his devoted wife, Katherine C. Robinson; his loving son, Daryl C. Robinson; his God-daughter, Tiffany E. Whittington; one Brother, William (deceased) Robinson; three sisters, Frances (Regina) Robinson of Columbus, Missouri, Clarona (Solon, both deceased)Watkins, and Julia (Leroy, deceased) Drake of Atlanta, Georgia; three Sisters in law, Josephine (William) Robinson, Shirley (Paul) Evans, and Eleanor Combs; one Brother in law, James H.
