 Betty Joan (Alquist) Scanga, 85, of Hackettstown, NJ was granted her angel wings on Friday, June 22, 2018 (on her mother’s birthday) and is now happily reunited with her husband of 64 years, Robert P. Scanga, who preceded her in death in September of 2017.  Betty was also predeceased in death by her parents, Geraldine and Herman Alquist of New Kensington, PA, where Betty was born.  Brothers George and wife Myrna Alquist, as well as Kenneth Alquist are all reunited in Heaven with Betty and Bob.  Betty is survived by two daughters, Diane E. Moeller and husband Jeffrey and daughter Brooke, Janice E. Babin and husband Gregory, and one son, Robert D. Scanga and wife Anna and daughter Andrea Stallman.  She is also survived by two beloved grandchildren, Kimberly and Colin, children of Janice and Greg.  Betty is also survived by one brother, Dennis Alquist and wife Flora, as well as Kenny’s wife Janice Alquist.  Betty was also an aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Betty was a graduate of New Kensington High School where she acquired her love of numbers and bookkeeping.  She was a Girl Scout and a cheerleader.  Betty was President of the Future Homemakers of America club and a member of the Youth Fellowship group.  Betty and her husband Bob were awarded king and queen of the Army base.  She was always a gorgeous and popular green-eyed redhead who everyone loved.

Betty was very involved with her children’s activities as a Girl Scout leader, CCD social event and fundraising volunteer and tutor.  Betty volunteered for years at her church rectory, Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and sang with the church choir.  Betty carried with her always a very strong religious faith.  She also volunteered for years at the Hackettstown Hospital gift shop.  She had jobs here and there during her marriage; first with Gilpin Van Trump & Montgomery Mortgage Company in Wilmington, DE as a bookkeeper and also Systems of the Future IT Company in Florham Park, NJ as a receptionist.  Betty was a member of the Panther Valley ladies bowling league where she also held the position of Secretary.  She was also the family secretary for her husband’s business as well as for her son with his Knights of Columbus volunteer work.

Betty was a doting wife and mother who adored cooking, baking, holidays and entertaining.  She went all out for holidays with her family, and she was an exceptional cook who entertained many of her husband’s business associates.  She has left for her children and grandchildren an extensive recipe collection.  Betty also loved planting flowers to beautify her yard, making afghans for the family, reading and playing cards.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday June 27, 2018 at 11 am at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 302 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ.  Visitation will be held at the Cochran Funeral Home from 9:00 to 10:30 am.

Entombment will follow the Mass at Union Cemetery, Mountain Ave., Hackettstown.

Bob...I am so sorry for your family's loss. I spent a lot of time talking to your mom in the gift shop since my office was right next door. She always had a smile on her face. She is at peace now and reunited with your dad. I will keep you in my prayers.
I’ll be thinking of you all Wednesday and will be with you in spirit. I’m thankful to have known Betty.
