Joan M. Gavin
Died: Oct 11, 2013
Joan M. (nee McCaffrey) Gavin, 82 of Allamuchy, NJ and Wildwood, NJ, formerly of Glen Ridge, NJ, died peacefully at home on October 11, 2013. Joan was proud to be the oldest child of Joe and Mary (nee Lynch) McCaffrey’s ten children, a loyal, loving and lively family rooted in Philadelphia, PA and now Monett, MO. Surviving of the “ten J’s” are Joe, Jack, Joyce Tinklepaugh, Jimmy, Jean Heinly, Jay, Jeff, Joel; with Jerry pre-deceased. Empowered by her faith and family, Joan’s youth initiated a lifelong respect, admiration and appreciation for education and music she developed and shared with “Sorority”, her treasured friends from Little Flower High School. She met the love of her life, her husband for 53 years, the late Francis P. Gavin, during high school and the adventure led to homes in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and for 38 years, Glen Ridge. Joan always supported her community and assumed leadership roles in scouts, the Glen Ridge Recreation Association, Sacred Heart Parish council and the Essex Skating Club in addition to her employment of over ten years as a co-director of CCD at Sacred Heart Parish in Bloomfield. Without question, Joan’s pride and joy were her children: Francis (Fran) Gavin, daughter in law Beth, of Allamuchy, NJ; Patricia Barr (Patti), son in law Pat, of Bryn Mawr, PA; John (Jack) Gavin, daughter in law Susan, of Mahwah, NJ; and Lisa Gavin of Bel Air, MD; and her grandchildren, Johanna, Owen, Clare, Gavin, Ryan, Maureen, Fiona, Alana and Graeme. Joan enjoyed a crisp Manhattan, a buttered slice of fresh rye bread, and a good game of Yahtzee but her love of family was constant and will endure for generations. Viewing will be held Tuesday, October 15th from 4-8 pm at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown, NJ 07840. On Wednesday, October 16th, a viewing will be held from 10-11am at Good Shepherd Church in Andover, NJ, followed by a mass of Christian burial starting at 11 am and then interment at Gate of Heaven in East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donation is made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, P.O. Box 36, Flowertown, Pa., 19031-0036. Online condolence may be given at www.cochranfuneral.com.

To the family of Joan:
I had the pleasure of working with Joan at Sacred Heart School CCD. We have remained friends over the years. I talked to her just 4 weeks ago and then went to Wildwood and visited Pat at the Gavin shore home. I was so glad that Joan and I got to talk and of the visit I had with Pat. My husband Rich and I want to send our deepest sympathies to you and your family and we will never forget her. mary lou snyder
