Charles Schuyler Keister, age 92, of 533 Grand Avenue, Hackettstown died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at home in Hackettstown. Charles was born February 8, 1919 in Lock Haven, PA. He is the son of the late Charles Lester and the late Eva (Schuyler) Keister. He married Violet "Hope" McGhee Keister.
Charles proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. Charles served in Patton's 3rd Army, 35th Infantry as a communications Staff Sergeant. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and also served in Germany and Luxemburg.
Charles attended Lock Haven State Teachers College and taught Social Studies at Lock Haven High School from 1941-1955, he received his Master's Degree from the University of Pennsylvania and served as the Supervising Principal of the Sugar Valley School in Loganton, PA from 1955 - 1959. Charles moved to Hackettstown, NJ in 1959 to fill the first principal position of the newly built Hackettstown High School. During this time he authored the book, "The Principal of the Thing." In 1970 Charles was selected as the superintendent of the Hackettstown School District where he served until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by his wife: Violet "Hope"(McGhee Keister) Keister ; Brother of Helen Sumpter; He also has two grandchildren. Daugher & son in law, Linda & Patrick McClune; Grandson, Ryan McClune; granddaughter, Ashley McClune.
Predeceased by his Late Sister, Dorothy Walker.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 4 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 213 Main Street, Hackettstown, N.J. with Dr. Rev. Frank Fowler officiating.
Calling hours will be Saturday, February 4 from 10:00 am - 12:00 Noon at Trinity United Methodist Church.
