Harry A. Swanson, age 93, of Vasa Park, Mount Olive Township, NJ died Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Harry was born May 11, 1919 in Morristown, NJ. He is the son of the late Alexander and Emma (Bengtson) Swanson.
He served in the Army Air Corps during WW II from 1942 to 1946 as a First Lieutenant with the 446th Bomb Squadron, 321st Bomb Group. He flew over 70 missions and received many medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the French Award, Legion of Honor. He was employed by Suburban Propane, Whippany, NJ as Accountant, retiring many years ago.
He is survived by two nephews, their spouses and children, Thomas Coleman, Jr. and Richard A. Swanson. Harry was cared for during his final months by close friends, Ginny and Jim Radel, Steve and Jayne Lewis, Grete Verdal and other friends of his Vasa Park community. Hospice and the VA Hospital assisted in his care and helped to fulfill his wish to pass at home. Brooke Rodges was also a special friend to Harry. Susan & Greg Holmes and Nancy Varatoni helped by generously giving financial support for at home nurse care during Harry’s final days.
The funeral will be held 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. Burial will be in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown, NJ on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Calling hours will be Saturday, October 20, 2012 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J.
