Barbara E. Slachetka (nee Mooney) passed on June 9, 2016. She was 101years old. Beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Slachetka, Sr. Barbara was predeceased by brothers; Leonard Mooney (Helen) and James Mooney (Jane) and sister; Marion Petro (Frank), grandson; Jeffrey. Survived by brother; Wilbur Mooney (Helen). Beloved mother of Joseph Jr. (Myra),
Rita Ryan (David), Mark (Winnie), and Norine Melillo (Tom); loving grandmother of Sarah, Karen, Meg and Michael; great-grandmother of Lillian and Miriam; and aunt of many nieces and nephews. Barbara was born and raised in Hackettstown. She graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1933, where she was captain of the girls' basketball team. Barbara received a nursing degree in 1938 from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ, where she was an obstetrical and general duty nurse until she joined the US Army Air Force in 1942, rising to the rank of lst Lieutenant. Upon returning to Hackettstown to raise her family, Barbara volunteered as the school nurse at St. Mary's Parochial School as well as with the annual Red Cross Blood Drive. She was employed at Newton Hospital and then at Picatinny Arsenal as an Occupational Health Nurse. Barbara was a member of both the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary. Both she and her late husband, Joseph, were honored to be the Grand Marshals for the Hackettstown Memorial Day parade in 2007. Barbara was an avid sports fan. She especially followed the Yankees and the Giants, and was a perennial winner of the March Madness bracket pool. She enjoyed creating beautiful needlepoint which were stretched, framed, and proudly displayed. Barbara also enjoyed traveling; especially the M&M bus trips to the Atlantic City casinos. Visitation will be held at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840 on Friday, June 17, 2016 from 4-7 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St, Mary's Church of the Assumption, 305 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840 on Saturday, June 18, 2015 at 12:30 pm.
