Edwin R. Mathesius Jr.
Edwin R. Mathesius Jr., 74, of Independence Township NJ, passed away on April 30, 2019 at home after a long illness. Edwin was born on December 28, 1944 to Edwin and Evelyn (Peters) Mathesius Sr. and was the eldest of seven children. Ed was the owner of Mathesius Construction Company (also known as EAM Construction) and worked in the Hackettstown area for 40+ years building and renovating many homes, which was his passion. He loved to create custom built homes and was meticulous in his carpentry and workmanship. He also was a member of the Hackettstown Kiwanis club for a number of years. Ed was an active member of St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption for 46 years. Ed loved big machines and earth moving equipment and never tired in learning the latest information about any truck that was ever manufactured or ever would be manufactured. Much to the chagrin of his family, he had a penchant for collecting a wide variety of construction antiquities and more than his fair share of hammers and tape measures. Ed had a passion for big projects, big families, and great food, especially if it involved gathering his family together to celebrate life. He never did anything on a small scale. His family would never go hungry or ever suffer from a lack of ice cream. He was bigger and larger than life and will be greatly missed. Ed is survived by his devoted wife, Annette (Balbo) Mathesius of fifty years, whom he loved with great tenderness. He was the proud father of four: Donna (Jeffrey) Tapp, Denise (Daniel) Swigart, Joseph (Melinda) Mathesius, Melissa (Thomas) Hughes and the proud grandfather of twenty grandchildren.
