Robert A. Hammell, age 84, of Hackettstown, NJ died Sunday, December 23, 2012 at home. Robert was born May 1, 1928 in Sparta, NJ. He is the son of the late Harold P. and Marian (Foulds) Hammell.
He served in the United States Navy during WW II. He was the owner/operator of Bob's Auto Electric, Hackettstown, NJ for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years: Carol (Carpenter) Hammell, at home; son,Timothy David Hammell, Chatham, VA; daughter & husband, Nancy & Stephen Zenes, Matthews, NC; daughter, Janice Hammell, Hackettstown, NJ; daughter & husband, Barbara & William Roberts, Hackettstown, NJ; Step Son & Wife, James & Karen Messler, Pocono Lake, PA; Step Son, Edward Messler, Hackettstown, NJ; brother & wife, Ed & Vera Hammell, Hampton, NJ; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; predeceased by a son, Robert Hammell, Jr.; and a step son, Michael Messler
Robert lived in Hackettstown, NJ for 50 years.. He was a founding member and former Exhaulted Ruler of the Hackettstown Elks Club; member of the Hackettstown Town Council; he started the Recycling program in Hackettstown in the late 1980’s; former member of the Economic & Environmental Control Board; member of the Planning Board; member of the Musconetcong Lodge F& AM # 42, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, Budd Lake, NJ; member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; member of the Warren County Vo Tech School Board for 16 years; Robert was an avid weather enthusiast and was a member of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network; he was a member of the American Legion Blue Ridge Post # 164, Hackettstown, NJ; member of the Warren County Pollution Control Finance Authority; he loved to travel and traveled with his wife extensively out west and through the Rockies.
The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. Burial will be private.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 4:00 - 8:00PM at Cochran Funeral Home, Inc., 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J.A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
