John William Schmidt, 95, of Hackettstown, NJ died surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at The House of the Good Shepherd. He was born on January 23, 1923 in Union City, NJ, to the late John and Louise (Krech) Schmidt. Upon graduation from Snyder High School in Jersey City, he became a Sergeant in the Army Air Force during WWII. Following the war he married his childhood sweetheart, June Gloria Seacord on December 8, 1945 and they were happily married for 72 years. John and June later moved to Paramus, NJ where they raised their family and developed many lifelong friendships. Most recently, he has been living at the House of the Good Shepherd in Hackettstown, NJ where he moved with his wife four years ago.
John was a linotype operator by trade and spent most of his career at Lind Brothers, Inc. in New York City. He was a member of the Typographical Union. He was also a talented proofreader. 
 John was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church for almost 60 years. He was a tireless worker, always willing to help out anyone in need. He was also a member of the Senior Pioneers in Paramus, NJ for many years. He was an avid photographer amassing a collection of over 10,000 slides all meticulously cataloged to share with friends and family. John loved to travel and was happiest when planning his next vacation.
John is survived by his daughters, Jacquelyn Trainor and her husband Edward of Succasunna, NJ and Jill Budd and her husband Ronald of Hackettstown, NJ, sister, Margaret Johnsen.  He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Megan (and her husband Colin Dray), Kevin (and his wife Kaity), Molly and Brian whom he treasured.
A service of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Christ Lutheran Church, 357 Farview Avenue, Paramus, NJ at 11:00 AM. Internment will immediately follow at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus and Century Roads, Paramus, NJ. Arrangements under the direction of the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840. 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either The Shepherd Fund, The House of the Good Shepherd, 798 Willow Grove St., Hackettstown, NJ 07840 or to Christ Lutheran Church, 357 Farview Ave., Paramus NJ, 07652.

My dear sweet buddy John. I'm sorry I wasn't there to say goodbye. You always found a way to make me laugh..it was such a pleasure to be able to take care of you and my June bug. You and her are now happily up there dancing the nights away. Love to you and your family..
