He served proudly in the Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1946 working as a cryptographer in the Asiatic Theatre of Operations in the South Pacific. As a member of the headquarters and base squadron, 337th Air service Group, he along with other officers and enlisted men, received a personal commendation for working under intolerable conditions during the installation of tactical communications for the 413th Fighter Group. In addition, he was awarded three bronze campaign stars during his service. He graduated from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, NJ and was previously employed by Ingersol Rand, Phillipsburg as an Engineering Draftsman retiring in 1975. John was a member of the Trinity United Methodist church, Hackettstown where he served as a member of the Board of Directors and a Sunday school teacher. He was an honorary member of the Hook and Ladder Company, Post #272, Hackettstown, a member of the American Legion, Post #273, Mediera Beach, FL, and a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post #282. John was awarded the Warren County Distinguished Military Award in 2004 also, he was a former member of the Civilian Conservation Corp.
He is survived by his loving wife: Shirley L. (Smith) Fazekas, his daughter, Lynn and her husband Hector, two sons, John, Jr. and Ron, three grandchildren, J. Lance, Ashley, Lance, and Carson.
A graveside service will be held 12:00 pm on Tuesday, May 29 at Union Cemetery, Mountain Avenue, Hackettstown with Dr. Rev. Frank Fowler officiating.
